WELCOME ; This is the new website for the Southern Ontario Heritage Livestock Club (SOHLC). This organization was formed by former members of the now disbanded Niagara Chapter of Rare Breeds Canada with the purpose of giving members an informal organization to allow for the exchange of information and ideas to do with heritage and endangered breeds of poultry and livestock and to work with others with similar objectives. We meet from eight to ten times a year on the first wednesday of the month at the OMAFRA building located at the old research station just north of the QEW at 8:00 in the evening. There is no meeting in January, and we often have farm tours instead of a meeting in July and August and in the month of December we meet at a restaurant for a pre-Christmas meal together.
We will meet on wednesday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. in Vineland and will have as a featured speaker Andy Sprouton who along with his wife Lisa operate a farm near Beamsville called “From Our Gate to Your Plate” selling their own farm products, mainly, at their on farm store. We look forward to hearing how Lisa and Andy have developed their farm and their experiences in direct marketing. This theme fits well with what most of our members consider is of the utmost importance to the sustainability of any breed and that is to have a use for them and have the ability to market heritage breeds succesfully.
The location for the December 5 restaurant meal has not yet been determined. Keep checking this website or contact Robin or Marie Kirby at 519 752-3980 for details.
As we finalize details for the upcoming meetings from February onwards in the new year we will have them posted on this website.
Look up andy and Lisa’s website www.fromourgatetoyourplate.ca for an interesting and informative read.
